You must have looked on a website and thought 'wow look at that' and I do not disagree. Some of the things that people can do with graphic design these days are absolutely staggering but this article is focusing on the importance of graphic design for websites.

We have all seen websites in the past that have amazed us by the quality or complexity of the graphics involved in its creation but how many of these sites have we purchased from or use on a regular basis. Granted we may say to our friends 'have you seen so and so it looks amazing'. Obviously this is having the desired effect of driving traffic to the site but is it getting people to buy or sign up?

Graphic Design is so much more than a beautiful site, it is a site that has been well thought out and designed so all the important information is clearly on display taking the visitor efficiently from the landing page to where as the business wants them to go .

Example:
Facebook is an incredibly popular site but it would never win any awards for its graphic design … would it? It is one of the best designed sites out there today, it may not look as snazzy as MySpace but it was thought out for convenience and usability, which some may not consider to be graphic design but with less time spent on 'where the shadow of this button will go 'and more time spent on' can the user see this information well enough 'or' is this text clear enough 'has enabled it to become incredibly user friendly and enhance it's rivals.

By creating a site that is clear to understand an navigate you will not only reap the benefits from potential customers who find your site useful but you may also save a penny or two or the original design of the website by not wasting three weeks on what background to have or where to put some drop shadows.

In conclusion I think businesses considering website creation need to take a step back and think about how clear the important information is on their site and how quickly you can navigate because if the user has not found what they came out looking for within a matter of seconds , it does not matter how pretty your site is, they will go to your competitors not as pretty but easy to use website.
